Monitoring & alerting
Designing instrumentation, defining thresholds and building alert schemes that people are willing to act on when it matters.
An early warning system is only as good as the decision it supports. The technical questions — which sensors, at what spacing, at what sampling rate — matter less than the operational ones: who is warned, on what criterion, with what lead time, and who carries the decision to close a road or evacuate a building.
My work covers instrumentation design and review, separation of irreversible displacement from reversible seasonal and thermoelastic components, definition of displacement-rate and rainfall thresholds, alert-level schemes with documented decision criteria, and the audit trail that makes those decisions defensible afterwards.
